Get Your Drink On- Lemon-Thyme Simple Syrup and Whiskey "Sours"

Dear lushes of the internets,

It's Friday.  Do you know what that means?  It's time to loosen our ties and booze it up.  Because I am such a kind hearted and generous individual, I would like to help in your efforts to get all blotto.  This whiskey based drink is light and sweet, but not cloyingly so.  The thyme really makes this- so I strongly encourage you to invest the 30 minutes it takes to make the simple syrup.

Lemon-Thyme Simple Syrup

Ingredients

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
l/4 cup lemon juice
1 tbsp lemon zest (about a 1/2 a lemons worth)
1 tsp dried thyme

Directions

1.  Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan.  Bring to a boil while occasionally stirring.  Remove from heat and let cool.  Strain through a fine metal sieve or cheese cloth.

Whiskey "Sours"

*Note:  This drink is a loose interpretation of a whiskey sour.  A delicious, delicious interpretation.

Ingredients

2 ounces whiskey (Canadian Club FOREVER!!!)
1 ounce lemon-thyme simple syrup
1 maraschino cherry (not optional!  Ok maybe.)
club soda to taste
ICE

Directions
1.  In your serving glass pour the whiskey, simple syrup, and cherry.  Add ice and top with however much soda you like.
2.  Rinse and repeat.

This is a seriously simple cocktail.  Really good for the poor sots such as myself who can't afford to have more than one kind of liquor at a time.  Seriously though, I just declined going out for 2 for $5 beers because I'm too broke #firstworldproblems.  Also, for those of you who aren't good at math,  this recipe is a simple 2 to 1 ratio.  So you could easily make larger batches of this (i.e 2 cups whiskey to 1 cup simple syrup).

Anyway, happy mixing and bottoms up!

Love,
greenhorn gourmande

  1. The syrup looks good. If one were to make a big batch, for how long does it keep? Inquiring minds want to know.

    1. Hey James, I've noticed you're full of questions. At any rate, I don't really know how long it would last in the fridge. I'm assuming quite some time because the sugar content is so high. Why don't you experiment, and report back to us?

  2. Lovely drink... like the herbal infusion idea for a sour...so much better than those nasty mixes!
